8th Festival of

Potluck Foods

August 31, 2003

Spotty rain didn’t deter a full house at Stevenson Center and Park from participating in the eighth Festival of Potluck Foods—a partnership project in diversity.

Hosts Jim Boushay and Rickey Sain Sr. of the Resources Unlimited Foundation and their co-hosts welcomed guests to an afternoon of food, music, art, and performance, which was organized by Alex Nied and Kathrine Nichols of the Youth Advocacy Council. The other nonprofit beneficiaries were Community of Congregations, Horizons Community Services, Vital Bridges, Westside Ministers Coalition, and West Suburban PADS.

Award-winning artists Dawn Ferencak, Jonathan Franklin, and Jonathon Romain displayed a showcase of art, blending specialty pottery with oils on canvas in different arrangements.  Darreon DeJion and Frank Somerfeld were event impresarios.  Derrick Martin served as general field manager.  Perry Wiggins decorated the dining tables, arranging baskets of fresh fruits and chocolates. Suzan Erem complained she didn't have enough to do to stay busy, yet busy she stayed.

Nancy and John Gora handled registration and the sign-in of the potluck offerings. Tony Sanfratello directed the foods room arrangements as well as the flow of guests.  Charla Eustice and Michele Boudet, both nutritionists and dietitians, oversaw proper food handling.

For the entertainment (click here for the complete line-up)  Denise Hicks and Jorden Kennington respectively were mistress and master of ceremonies. Rev. Charlotte Nold, pastor of St. John United Church of Christ, served as sign language interpreter. Dan Fore, and Bill Kavanagh of BobDog Studios, provided the sound system and engineering. Performance pieces under a large tent—which also served as the setting for the decorated dining tables loaned by area churches—included dancers, drummers, singers, rap artists, two rock bands, and several solo instrumentalists. Martha Brock Photography provided video cameras and related equipment as well as an event photographer for taking still pictures (many are included here).

Inspired by the gifts and partners, as well as by the extraordinary skill and cooperation of the Park District of Oak Park, Resources Unlimited Foundation looks forward next year to the 9th community potluck in October 2004. Thank you.
